Mayor Van Johnson is a champion for economic mobility as the Mayor of Savannah, Georgia. His leadership focuses on promoting financial literacy, workforce development, and equitable access to resources, helping all residents achieve long-term economic success.
This fireside chat is moderated by Phyllis Dickerson, CEO of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA). AAMA is deeply committed to advancing economic mobility in communities across the nation. Through initiatives like the 2024 Economic Mobility Leadership Institute (EMLI), AAMA equips member-mayors with the tools and strategies to drive long-term financial empowerment and opportunity in their cities.
Mayor Van R. Johnson II is the official head of the City of Savannah. He presides over all meetings of the Mayor and Aldermen and, as Executive Officer, signs all motions, resolutions, and ordinances passed by the Savannah City Council. Mayor Johnson is a dynamic communicator, former radio talk show host, political commentator, and newspaper columnist renowned for his independent thought and passionate advocacy. He is a nationally certified human resources professional and a Georgia-certified law enforcement professional. On the national stage, Mayor Johnson’s influence extends far beyond Savannah. He is the 2nd Vice President of the National League of Cities, President of the African American Mayors Association, and a member of the United States Conference of Mayors.
